Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
