Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
