The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
