Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
